Today’s adventure was building a Dryer Notification Zigbee Device in our latest livestream. I picked up this device because I’ve helped a few people in Discord and the Home Assistant Forums work on their dryer notification, and it seemed like an easy way to know when your electric dryer or washer is running. Not only that, but it also doubles as a device you could use to monitor power usage.
First, I built a little extension cord that allowed me to create a loop of the live wire to pull through the device. This was a crucial step in getting the device set up. Next, I tried to install it on ZHA, which unfortunately turned out to be a waste of time. There’s no built-in quirk for it, and all I had access to was checking if it needed an update.
But that didn’t stop me! I then installed the device into Zigbee2mqtt, and it fired up perfectly. Power, volts, amps – everything worked just as it should. This is why I don’t like ZHA much; it’s just too restrictive.
Now that we had a device, we could build an automation using the UI editor. We also showed you a template binary sensor and an automation that I currently use, which could be adapted for this new device. If you’re interested in learning more about those, check out the links below. Furthermore, I’ll eventually modify my existing code to use this new device’s features, so stay tuned for updates.
Finally, we ended our show with a surprise star of the show: an H1 ornament from Apollo Automation. It was a fun addition to our live stream, and maybe another time we’ll have even more fun with it.
