Double Hung Window Sash Chain Replacement

Double Hung Window Sash Chain Replacement

Today, we’re tackling our Double Hung Window Sash Chain Replacement project – a task I’ve been putting off for far too long. Many of our original sash ropes have failed, and the windows no longer stay closed. We’ll also be replacing the old blinds with blackout shades.

I noticed the problem when sitting in my bed; I could see the curtains moving a lot… Either we had a ghost in this old house or there was a leak. However, after ruling out the paranormal option, I saw that the upper sash was no longer connected to the sash ropes, and the window was open.

Luckily, there’s a storm window that kept some of the cold out, but realistically not much. So, now in the summer, I found a sash chain replacement kit on the Jungle Website – the modern replacement for our old wash line ropes. Furthermore, we’ve also sourced some blackout roller blinds to replace the rotten or incorrect ones.

First, let’s take a look at the old sash ropes and how they’re coming loose. Next, we’ll demonstrate how to install the new sash chain kit. What’s more, we’ll also show you how to install the new blackout shades to fit our windows perfectly.

Equally important, making these repairs requires some patience and attention to detail. Nor is it a task for the faint of heart. However, with the right tools and a bit of elbow grease, you can get your Double Hung Windows working like new again.

Last but not least, I’m excited to share my experience with you and show that even an old guy like me can fix things around the house.

I retired from a large mid-western medical equipment manufacturer on December 31 (2019) and decided to try to let everyone in on my life and my transition into retirement. I have a varied set of interests. I live in a 90 year old cape cod in the middle of a small city of 70,000 people. I have a small lot across the street from the city seat of government, but despite that I have a 1952 Allis Chalmers farm tractor that I drive around the city from time to time. My wife has a business that has me fixing and creating cool home decor out of broken windows and drywall screws. I have been known to buy things on 'for sale' lists, fix it up, clean it up, generally add value and sell it off. Oh, yes, I'm getting chickens! But first I have to build the chicken coop and run. It will be like no other you have ever seen. Also will give me something to do. I am into home automation, have a Home Assistant enabled home and so will the chickens! I'll have to give them a password...
