Tuya Lights in Home Assistant

Tuya Lights in Home Assistant

In this video, I’m excited to share with you my experience with Tuya lights in Home Assistant, a project that has taken me all summer. Since I got these lights for free, I decided to put them up and see how they would work. Let me show you what I did.

Because I am visiting at the Cottage, which is a bit of a commute from my main home, this project took longer than expected. I don’t have access to all my home resources up there, so I had to be creative and figure things out as I went along. There are 4 separate sections in this video, so you can jump around if you’d like.

First, let’s talk about the installation of the lights and mains wiring (Section 1). This was a relatively straightforward process, but it did require some patience and attention to detail. Next, I’ll be showing you how I tried hard to install a switch, but unfortunately, it didn’t quite work out as planned (Section 2). However, after a few attempts, I was able to succeed in installing the switch, which was a huge relief (Section 3).

What’s equally important to note is that I built a couple of automations to control these lights, which
may be helpful to you. These can be found here: https://gist.github.com/SirGoodenough/9b3731ed6d30813aee15925f92dca8f4. This project was a great learning experience for me, and I’m excited to share it with you (Section 4).

Finally, besides the automations, there are some other tips and tricks that I learned along the way that may be helpful to you as well. Next time you’re working on a DIY project like this, keep these in mind: always read the instructions carefully, make sure you have all the necessary materials before starting, and don’t be afraid to ask for help if you need it.

So, what’s next? Well, I’ll be doing some further work on automating my lights and exploring other ways to integrate them with Home Assistant. Moreover, I’m excited to hear from you – do you have any questions or comments about this project? I’d love to hear from you in the comments below.

Last but not least, if you liked this video, be sure to subscribe to my channel for more DIY projects and tutorials. Thanks for watching, and I’ll see you in the next episode!

I retired from a large mid-western medical equipment manufacturer on December 31 (2019) and decided to try to let everyone in on my life and my transition into retirement. I have a varied set of interests. I live in a 90 year old cape cod in the middle of a small city of 70,000 people. I have a small lot across the street from the city seat of government, but despite that I have a 1952 Allis Chalmers farm tractor that I drive around the city from time to time. My wife has a business that has me fixing and creating cool home decor out of broken windows and drywall screws. I have been known to buy things on 'for sale' lists, fix it up, clean it up, generally add value and sell it off. Oh, yes, I'm getting chickens! But first I have to build the chicken coop and run. It will be like no other you have ever seen. Also will give me something to do. I am into home automation, have a Home Assistant enabled home and so will the chickens! I'll have to give them a password...
