Fix Your Broken Countertop Ice Maker

Hello everyone, Sir GoodEnough here! This week we tackled a really frustrating problem: a broken countertop ice maker. The object if this weeks video is a countertop ice maker that broke months ago. We tear it down and see what makes it tick.

This thing quit with visual signs that the pump wasn’t pumping. It turns out that was a secondary symptom of the plastic ice bucket being cracked. I guess you would say this failed the ice bucket challenge!

We started by completely disassembling the ice maker, carefully documenting each step. And then, we began to investigate the cause of the failure. It quickly became clear that the plastic ice bucket was the culprit – it was cracked!

The cracked plastic caused the water to leak out of the ice coils. Moreover, it prevented the micro switches from activating both the pump and the defrost cycle, so it was a pretty vital piece of plastic. Without those switches working, nothing was happening!

What’s more, we identified exactly what needed to be replaced. It’s a reminder that even seemingly small parts play a crucial role in how an appliance functions. And finally, I found the replacement part and successfully fixed it – a satisfying win!
